Trains!! I love trains, so I loved this section of Yoho Park, just west of Banff. Besides legendary scenery, Yoho is home to the spiral tunnels of the Canadian Pacific Railroad.
First, I secured a campsite with a glorious view of the Cathedral Mountain and the railroad line.
Then I drove up the Yoho valley to the Takkakaw Falls, a 900 foot wonder pouring off a unseen glacier high above. The sounds was thunderous.
I had planned to hike up the Iceline Trail, but the weather was rainy and cloudy so I had lunch and took a nap instead. I woke up to more rain so I drove to watch the trains go in and out of the spiral tunnels, circular tunnels in the mountain which allow the train to reverse 180 direction. Before this loop trick was installed trains would runaway off the steep track. Look closely at the pic below and you can see the train entering and then exiting below itself in the other direction. Same train.
The sky eventually cleared a bit, allowing me to visit this cool natural bridge.
Then a visit to the reflective-at-dusk Emerald Lake and some luxurious cabins on an inlet of the lake.
Clouds at Emerald Lake.
